Usual number of days in your cycle:

After you've done that simply hit 'calculate' and you'll be given your ovulation period.  These are the days when you are most fertile and therefore most likely to conceive.

Incidentally, the software will also give you your due date should you conceive on those days.

How It Works

The calculator works on the principle that ovulation generally occurs two weeks before the first day of your period.  So for most women, the first day of their period signifies fourteen days since they ovulated.

This rule generally holds true for menstrual cycles of different lengths - you don't have to have a 28 day cycle.  A cycle of 30 days will still generally ovulate fourteen days before the period.

This method of calculation relies a regular cycle for one thing, and it relies on your body 'following the rules'.  As you no doubt know, not everyone does follow the rules and many of us have bodies that like to do their own thing!

Other Methods For Calculating Ovulation

Essentially ovulation occurs as a result of hormonal cycles in your body.  Other methods of calculating ovulation utilize other bodily signs of how these hormones affect us e.g. temperature, or they can even measure these hormones themselves.

You will have likely seen 'ovulation detection kits' in the stores, and most of these will measure hormone levels through your urine or your saliva.

Doctors can also measure your hormone levels through blood tests, although this is generally reserved for those using the services of a fertility specialist.
